Film Review – SKYLINE

31 03 2011

First off let me just say that this was not what I originally planned but it has been a few years since I saw the film I was going to do. If you are interested in knowing what it was, it was Godzilla vs Mecha-Godzilla. Anyway – SKYLINE.

There is a video game called Left 4 Dead it’s quite a fun game where you play as 1 of 4 characters who are survivors in an area full of zombies. The idea is that you have to get from one side of the map to the other with the other 3 characters who are there to support you. You have an assortment of weapons to use and different kinds of zombies to kill. You might be wondering what this has to do with SKYLINE. Well SKYLINE is kind of like Left 4 Dead except Turk from Scrubs is the only one with a Gun, the people in the film are trapped around an apartment complex, the Zombies are Giant Aliens, a Nuclear Bomb goes off, the Aliens can’t be killed and it is a movie instead of a Video Game.

The film is by the Brothers Strause and is one of 2 films I wanted to see last winter but couldn’t and I had to wait until it came out on DVD before I could watch it, after I have watched the other one (MONSTERS) I can finally do my Film Awards. The film stars Donald Faison (Turk from Scrubs), Eric Balfour (Milo from 24) and Scottie Thompson.

Its main plot line is Don’t Look Up. Basically Aliens are sending lots of Blue Lights down onto the planet that people are drawn towards and their skin goes odd for a bit and then if they go into the light they get sucked up into the light and into the Alien Spaceships. Ok it’s not fully explained why the aliens do this.

Well Eric Balfour and his Friend Elaine (Scottie Thompson) are arriving in Los Angeles for Donald Faison’s Birthday and have a good time and then the blue lights start to appear and one of their friends disappears after looking into the lights. Well Donald Faison and Eric Balfour go to the roof and See Alien Spaceships coming down and sucking people up into the spaceships. Well they go back into the flat and try to survive when the aliens start to check the buildings. Also in a side plot Elaine is Pregnant but not much is said about that and Eric Balfour is a little different after looking into the light. Well they try to escape but Giant Aliens are on the ground now and start to capture people and suck people’s brains out. The survivors consisting of Jarrod (Eric Balfour), Elaine, Candice (Brittany Daniel) and one of the workers at the Apartment Complex; Oliver (David Zayas). Well they stay in the flat while the US Air Force attack the UFO’s and manage to drop a Nuclear Bomb on it causing it to fall, but then the ship repairs itself. Jarrod is feeling the effects of looking at the light and he wants to escape but the others don’t think it’s a good idea. Well eventually they come under attack from the aliens and try to escape, Oliver kills one of the big Aliens but also kills himself and Candice gets killed by the Alien before Oliver kills it, while Jarrod and Elaine kill an alien but are then abducted into the blue light. You then see that there are ships all over the Earth. Then in the spaceship Elaine almost has her brain sucked out but is spared when the aliens find out that she is pregnant and then all over brains that have been sucked out of the other people caught turn blue except one which is red and gets put into an alien body lie the blue brains but this one belongs to Jarrod who in the form of an Alien protects Candice. The film ends there with many questions unanswered.

The film is actually quite Good but can be scary in some parts. It is interesting in this film where the Aliens can’t be killed and whereas others show Humans defeating the Aliens, in this one the Aliens defeat the Humans. It one of those films where the Aliens are a big threat, like in Independence Day and the recent Battle Los Angeles. The scene with the air force attacking the ships is spectacular but it only happens once and I s a shame. With the new wave of Alien Invasion Films coming out I want to see a Good Alien Invasion Film, one with lots of Battle Sequences with Good Shots of both the Humans and the Aliens. Like Independence Day with Battle Los Angeles. This is like Cloverfield where it concentrates on the Humans other than the Fight which is Good but I want to see more Battle Sequences.

SKYLINE is a Good film with Interesting Ideas and Interesting Design for the Aliens (some of them are Gigantic, kind of like an Alien Monster Movie) with a look at how the citizens would cope in an alien invasion but for me I want more Battle Scenes, however this being one of the first in a new wave of alien invasion films is a Good Idea and enjoyable if you like Alien Invasion Films.
