MCA – Monster Combat Alliance – Second Chance

26 02 2013

Second Chance

It is now the second month of the year and time for a special event. The MCA has not been running for long but there are still monsters (7 in total) who have yet to win a match. So this month the bottom 8 monsters in the MCA will participate in a mini tournament to stack up some wins. The winner of this evening will not win anything really except for a nice head start of 3 wins to climb up the ranks. The 8 monsters competing tonight are:

  • The Kraken (The only monster tonight to have previously won a match)
  • Mothra
  • The Host
  • Imoogi
  • The Ultimate Warrior
  • King Ghidorah
  • Buraki
  • Zudomon

So, for the first round of this tournament, the monsters will not be shown until they win a match. So another 4 monsters will lose yet another match, while 4 are guaranteed a win. All the first round matches are simple 3 fight matches. Let the Chaos begin.

The first match will be The Kraken vs Mothra – The Kraken goes first.

How To Fight An Alien – Monsters VS Aliens

19 02 2013

Monsters vs. Aliens (DreamWorks Animation - 2009)

If aliens were to invade the planet, what would you do? There were several things you could do like run, fight, panic or make friends. Let’s say you were going to fight, how would you do it? You could shoot at them providing they cannot resist it, you could attempt to poison them providing they have cannot resist that either, or you could use as this film suggests Monsters. In my opinion that is a brilliant idea seeing as their track record for this thing is better than humans. I mean Gamera defeated Legion and Godzilla has fought, defeated destroyed several space monsters as well as spaceships on several occasions. So let’s see how the monsters suggested in this film get on.

MVA5

In space a mysterious glowing object fly’s towards earth. Meanwhile a woman named Susan (Reese Witherspoon) is getting ready for her wedding. Before her wedding she sees her husband to be Derek who changes the honeymoon plans while Susan suppresses her disappointment (it was obvious from this point that this guy was an idiot). Before she goes in to get married Susan is hit by the mysterious object which stops glowing. She goes into the church and starts glowing herself, she gets bigger and bigger and ends up outside the church where the military are waiting and capture her. She is taken to a top-secret department headed up by W. R. Monger (Kiefer Sutherland). There she meets the other Monsters who have also been captured. A Half Human Half Cockroach mad scientist named Dr Cockroach (Hugh Laurie), The Missing Link, a 20,000 year old fish ape (Will Arnett), B.O.B. (or Bob) A genetically altered tomato mixed with ranch desert topping to create an indestructible gelatinous mass – with no brain (Seth Rogen) and finally Insectosaurus, a Giant Bug even bigger than Susan, and who looks rather cuddly (Unable to talk but is mysteriously played by Conrad Vernon).

MVA1

Meanwhile a strange object lands near a romantic couple. The couple go and have a look at the site of the crash and are spotted by a giant eye. The military are brought in and the president (Stephen Colbert) arrives to have a look and attempt to make contact. While his keyboard skills create a response, the response involves the now identified alien robot smashing the keyboard. The robot goes on the loose and is resistant to all forms of firepower. The president and his team in a badly designed underground bunker try to find a solution. Monger arrives and gives his idea for a monster attack. The president agrees and so the Monsters are informed of what they will be doing and told that they will go free if successful. They then journey to San Francisco. Soon after arriving they are confronted by the robot, Bob gets stuck to it while Link swims into the city and Dr Cockroach messes around with a tam car. Susan escapes to the city where the giant robot takes an interest in her mainly because her power comes from the space object and the robot is sent by an alien who wants it. Susan is chased to the bridge when Insectosaurus turns up to battle the robot, however he gets confused by the bright eye light coming from the robot. Susan discovers her great strength and battles the robot and along with her new friends succeeds in destroying it. The alien who sent the robot plots a course for earth after the robot’s defeat.

MVA4

Susan along with her new friends return to her home in Modesto to see her parents and Derek. Her parents put on a party for her friends while she goes to see Derek. After just a few minutes everyone at the party runs away. Meanwhile Derek breaks up with Susan because he cares more about his career than her. Susan and her friends leave the town and Susan realises that becoming a monster is the best thing that has happened to her. She is then abducted by the Alien and Insectosaurus is shot trying to save her. Susan wakes up wearing different clothes in the robot hangar deck of the alien spaceship. She is met by the alien who imprisons her, however she manages to escape and runs after him, only to be caught again and have the power within her drained bringing her back down to normal size. The alien named Gallaxhar (Rainn Wilson) tells of his traumatic life but is constantly interrupted by the cloning machine he is strapped to and then uses both the clone machine and the alien energy to build an army to invade the earth. Meanwhile back on the planet Insectosaurus is covered in a strange stringy material while the three other monsters decide to go aboard the alien spaceship to get Susan back with some help from Monger. They get on board, locate Susan and rescue her disguised (badly but somehow works due to the low intelligence of the aliens) as aliens. However the aliens discover that the three monsters really are monsters and go on the attack. The group break into the ships mainframe and thanks to Dr Cockroach’s PHD in dance manage to set the ship to self-destruct.

MVA8

Susan manages to get out of the room before the main doors shut but the other three don’t.  Susan goes to see Gallaxhar and manages to get her powers back and save her friends. They journey to the outside of the ship and are rescued by Monger and Insectosaurus who has turned into a butterfly. The group return to Modesto and are greeted as heroes. Susan gets revenge on Derek by flicking him into the sky before Bob breaks his fall (who also breaks up with him under the idea that he too is going out with Derek). The group of monsters then flies off to Paris to save the city.

MVA6

It is interesting to see how many references there are to sci-fi, alien and monster movies. Before the alien robot arrives, the young couple were parodying several monster alien movies from the past. However this time it is the man who is scared and the woman is the stronger (both mentally and physically) character. The scene usually plays out as a young couple in a car getting romantic and then the monster/alien attacks. However the references continue when the alien pod lands which is similar in some way to The War of the Worlds. Then when the president arrives he tunes the keyboard to the tune played in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Other references to such films include secret underground headquarters (that must have cost a lot of money but don’t explain how) as well as the film’s soundtrack.

MVA9

The films characters are a nice blend of both Odd and Interesting. The character of Susan is played nicely and brings in the sense of not knowing what’s going on, in a panic about where she is and the attempts she goes to, to be normal again. However in the end she embraces and accepts her new identity and makes some good while obviously odd friends. Dr. Cockroach is also well done and plays the part of more a mad scientist than a freak (his dancing scene is one of the best parts in the film, at least in my opinion). Bob is funny throughout while Missing Link is a very strong character in many ways and it does seem that he does not get enough scenes. But the real star for me is Insectosaurus. While not being able to talk, Insectosaurus looks Great (as well as cuddly) and his/her/it’s scenes are always a treat.

MVA7

Gallaxhar is quite nicely made and a well written part and has some of the most amusing scenes in the films, mostly when the scene involves his clones. His life story is quite amusing too, because he keeps on getting interrupted by his cloning machine. From what I have been able to make out his story goes along the lines of him being born and finding out that his parents belonged to some political faction or alien religion and did not like it so he went on the road with some giant alien and either met another alien who he married or married the giant alien and was happy until she probably wanted to have alien children but he did not like the idea and somehow this led to him destroying his home planet.

MVA2

But to me the best parts in the film belong to Monger and the President. The President is very funny as well as being a bit daft while trying to look clever. While Monger is very down to earth and serious. Mongers parts are not obvious, have a joke at him funny, it is funnier in the way he talks and what he says, while the president has humour thrown at him due to his actions. I would not really call this a Monster Movie as that would suggest that the all the monsters are Big; really there is only 2 that are taller than humans. However if I was to classify this film as a monster movie I may be right in thinking that this is the first CGI animated Monster Movie, but I classify this film more as an animated film though with Monsters in it. I just thought I would point that out.

MVA3

Overall Monsters VS Aliens is a thoroughly Enjoyable film and one of the best CGI Animated films in recent years. With a Great cast of characters, great visuals and an amazingly funny story; Monsters VS Aliens is a definite must see.

Five Months Until Pacific Rim

12 02 2013

Jaeger

It is now just Five months until one of the years biggest films is released. A film which I have rated as the second most exciting film of this year, beaten only by another Monster Movie. The film in question is Pacific Rim. Directed by the Legendary Guillermo del Toro (Blade 2 and Pan’s Labyrinth)the film is about the battle of survival as the Human Race is attacked by Giant Monsters and deploys Giant Robots called Jaegers to defend themselves. The film has drawn its inspiration in two ways. Of course it draws some if not most of its inspiration from Japanese Kaiju films (like Godzilla) but also from a painting by Francisco Goya called The Colossus. It is from this painting that Del Toro drew inspiration from.

Colossus Godzilla

The film will star Charlie Hunnam (Sons Of Anarchy), Rinko Kikuchi (Babel and the upcoming 47 Ronin) as well as Idris Elba (The WireLuther, Thor and Prometheus). The film also stars Ellen McLain (The computer voice in Portal and Portal 2 other wise known as GLaDOS) as the AI for the robots.

Pacific Rim (Legendary Pictures - 2013)

The film has already been filmed but it has been given a July release probably because it would make more money. From what has already been shown in both the teaser trailer and the official trailer, the film looks Fantastic. It looks like a del Toro film in its visuals as it looks more like a piece of art in its visuals than a standard shot action film. As the film is still a few months off only a few details and visuals have been released and so in a way that allows me to do a proper preview in June much like I did for Prometheus. It is now only 5 months until Giant Robots and Giant Monsters do battle.

Sam’s Rant – Curly Wurly Price Increase

6 02 2013

Cadbury Curly Wurly

It has been a long time since I did a Rant, but there are major reasons why that is. Mainly because it involves having to split the ones which are safe to do and those that are too personal. Another reason could be that there has not been much to (safe) Rant about. That was until the other day when I was at University and wanted to buy a Curly Wurly.

Kelloggs Nutri-Grain Elevenses

Well I had just had lunch and was going to do some work in the library, so I went to buy a drink and a snack. After looking through all the cake bar things and finding absolutely nothing that seemed edible, in particular I was looking for one of those Nutri-Grain Elevenses Bakes things which have the bad marketing scheme of aiming it at the Elevenses market because most people (like me) would buy them any time of the day therefore beating their purpose completely pretty much like what people do for After Eights but when you think about almost any time of day is after eight because even 5 am is after 8 yesterday. When it says After Eight, which eight are they talking about, although you could see it as a pun for after you ate, hahahahahahahahaha.

Nestle After Eight

Any way I was looking for a Nutri-Grain Elevenses Bakes and upon finding nothing went into the mainstream chocolate collection and decided to buy a Curly Wurly. I knew it would only cost me 20p because they have always only cost 20p, un less you think of those extra-long ones which are only available to buy in Bath at the Cadbury’s Shop or Kraftwerk shop if you want to be pedantic and cost something like £1.40 which does not make sense seeing as a Curly Wurly is only 20p and so the Extra Long ones should only be 40p, it’s simple math’s KRAFTWERK.

Cadbury

Anyway, now that I had my Curly Wurly and a Strawberry Milkshake bottle thing, so not exactly a Milkshake, more like bottled milk, which is pretty much how it comes in the first place, after the cow that is. I went up to the checkout and discovered that the Curly Wurly was 35p, not 20p. Why? Why did you change the price Kraftwerk? Fine, you bought Cadbury’s but why did you then decide to increase the price of something cheap and popular. Well there could be many reasons, and while we are on the subject of Riesen’s, why do you not make them anymore, they were fantastic, Bring back Reasons and perhaps Spira’s too, thanks.

Riesen and Spira

Anyway, there maybe several reasons why they increased the price of Curly Wurly’s, including Money problems and buying out Cadbury’s in the first place. Well in that case it could be understandable. I know we are all in a Recession Thingy at the moment but still, WHY OH WHY DID YOU INCREASE THE PRICE OF THE CURLY WURLY BY 15p? This Rant is probably going to be just filled with more ways of saying the same question over and over again. But still, the point stands. Why do I have to pay an extra 15p for something that was originally and long lastingly just 20p? Bring Back the 20p Curly Wurly I say.

Why I Have Been Ignoring And Simultaneously Almost Refusing To Notice The Pagani Huayra

5 02 2013

Pagani Huayra

It is no big secret that I like cars, I like all sorts of cars but my Favorite genre/type of cars are Super Cars. While I do like Big Four by Fours as well as classic cars and even some family type cars, I do prefer supercars to most other types. If I was to give you a list of my top 5/top 10 Favourite cars it would be highly likely that most of the list will be filled with Supercars.

Lamborghini Gallardo

But more recently I have been ignoring one car in particular. A car that if you were to look at it you would think I would like it, but to me it has been causing some irritating headaches.

Pagani Huayra

This is the car in question, the Pagani Huayra (Don’t ask me how to pronounce to it). I have known about the existence of this car for a few years. When it was first announced I looked around for some pictures of it with no luck. Every so often I would try and look it up. But most of the time I did not want to think about it. It was not until a recent episode of Top Gear that I gave it a proper look. And I liked what I saw; it has a Good shape and gives out a lot of Power and noise, all key components of a Supercar. It also had lots of nice extras including the interesting Gear Stick. However, even after the impressive demonstration and Lap Time to me, it is still a bit irritating. Why? Well, this is why?

Pagani Zonda Tricolore

This is the Pagani Zonda. Produced by the same company that builds the Huayra, launched in 2000, the Zonda has had various different versions over the years including the C12R, S, Cinque, Tricolore and F. The Zonda (Zonda F to be exact) is also my Favourite Car. The first time I saw it was on an episode of Top Gear (The Milau Bridge Episode, one of the Best Episodes), but it was not until the F made an appearance that it became my Favourite Car, and has been that way since. It’s body shape, it’s style, it’s noise and it’s speed alone make it a Fantastic Car, but to me the thing that makes it the best is that it is the true definition of a Supercar. It’s futuristic as well as mad, its name too, ZONDA, what a Fantastic name for a car. Supercars are dream cars for many and the Zonda represents this spectacularly as being a car that once existed in the minds of motoring fans, almost an impossibility before arriving on the scene and not just being a one-off car, it became a Legend of Motoring.

Pagani Zonda F

So why would I be ignoring a car that is being promoted as the Successor to the Zonda. Well that’s it; I don’t want the Zonda to disappear. The Zonda is an incredible car and as far as I can see it cannot be replaced and should not be replaced. Sure, the company needs to progress and build new cars to continue, but why not make the Zonda alongside the Huayra. While the Zonda and the Huayra share similar looks and in that sense you could say that they are basically the same car, I still prefer the Zonda to the Huayra The time leading up to the end of the Zonda was sad for me. While it did went out on a bang with the R and Tricolore, it was still the end of my Favourite car.

Zonda Cinque

It may be the end of the Zonda as the main car produced by Pagani but I do not think of this as the real end of the Zonda. I am sure Pagani have their plans for the car that made them what they are, but for now the Huayra is their main project. So perhaps that is what is meant as the successor to the Zonda, it is the new Project as the Zonda is now complete.
