Sam’s Rant – Film Awards 2011

18 04 2012

Yes it is that time of the year when Good films are given Awards. The awards season has passed but who cares. It is time for the awards that matter to be handed out. So Let’s see who has won this year.

Best Actor – Nominations are: Aaron Eckhart in Battle Los Angeles, Andy Serkis in Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Chris Hemsworth in Thor and Robert Downey Jr in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows.

The Winner is: Chris Hemsworth for playing Thor in Thor.

Best Supporting Actor – Nominations are: Idris Elba for playing Heimdall in Thor, Anthony Hopkins for playing Odin in Thor, Stephen Fry for playing Mycroft in SH:AGOS (simple form) and Scott Glenn for playing the wise man in Sucker Punch.

The Winner is: Idris Elba for his fantastic performance as Heimdall in Thor.

Best Actress – The Nominations are: Natalie Portman as Jane Foster in Thor, Elle Fanning as Alice Dainard in Super 8, Noomi Rapace as Madame Simza Heron in SH:AGOS and Michelle Rodriguez as Elena Santos in Battle Los Angeles.

The Winner is: Elle Fanning for her performance as Alice Dainard in Super 8.

Best Supporting Actress – The Nominations are: Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis in Thor, Jaimie Alexander as Sif in Thor and Rachel McAdams as Irene Adler in SH:AGOS.

The Winner is: Kat Dennings as the teenage like Darcy Lewis in Thor.

Most Disappointing film of the year – The Winner is: Sucker Punch. It looked good but the film was all over the place, it was harder to understand than Inception. It has some nice bits and good characters but it’s not as good as it could have been.

Best Improvement of the year – The Winner is: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2. Seeing as Part 1 is the Worst Film in the history of cinema part 2 was a good improvement and a nice end to the series, I am just so glad it is all over (if there was a ninth one I probably would have gone insane).

HP7P2 (Warner Bros. 2011)

Trailer of the Year – the Nominations are: Transformers: Dark of the Moon, Thor, Battle Los Angeles, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and Super 8.

The Winner is: Super 8 for both the original trailer and its main trailer (preferably the original one).

Best Special Effects – The Nominations are: Super 8, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Battle Los Angeles, Thor and Transformers: Dark of the Moon.

The Winner is: Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Super 8 (Joint Winner), The battle scenes and the robots in Transformers were amazing but Super 8’s camera work, lighting and effects as a whole cannot be ignored so that is why they hold the title together.

Super 8 and Transformers 3

One to Watch in 2012: at his point it is unlikely that the Legendary Pictures Godzilla film will be getting released this year and there is still no news on The Host Sequel, they would be the ones to watch but for now they are not. This award goes to a film I did not see coming and have already seen. I am looking forward to its home media release more than seeing any other film at the cinema this year. It is quite possibly my Favourite Non-Godzilla film (I will find out when it gets released on DVD). It is the Incredibly Fantastic film known as The Hunger Games.

The Hunger Games (Lionsgate - 2012)

Best Original Idea – The Nominations are: Super 8 and Battle Los Angeles

The Winner is: Battle Los Angeles for bringing back the Alien Invasion idea to the 21st Century and making it awesome once again (OK it is not as Good as Independence Day).

Best Character – The Winner is: Heimdall in Thor. An absolute beast of a man, an incredibly intimidating and cool character.

Best Cameo – The Winner is: Hugh Jackman as Wolverine in X-Men First Class telling Magneto and Xavier exactly what he thinks (WARNING: Contains Strong Language), it would be good to see him in any future films they do.

Best Director – The Nominations are: J. J. Abrams for Super 8, Michael Bay for Transformers: Dark of the Moon and Kenneth Branagh for Thor.

The Winner is: I was unsure if making a Super Hero film would work for someone like Kenneth Branagh but he has done an amazing job, he picked some of the finest actors who took on the roles just because he was Directing it. It was an incredible film and he has done an incredible job.

Your Choice 3: Happy or Sad

12 10 2011

Happy or Sad

Some of you may remember that last year I let you choose which 1 of 4 films (that I did not want to see) I would review. The film chosen was High School Musical. Then I did another one where I let you choose 1 of 7 Monster Movies and then I would review that aswell. Both The Host and Cloverfield were chosen and so I reviewed them in June aswell as 3 other monster movies including the Best Film in the world. Well it has been about a year since I first did it and so I thought I would let you do the same again but with a difference.

This time it is Happy or Sad. I have chosen 4 films and it is up to you to decide which one I do (I will probably do the review in February again or maybe even January). Now you may be wondering what I mean by Happy or Sad. Well I have chosen 2 films that I have seen and really enjoy as well as 2 films that I have seen and don’t want to see (So you can vote to make me either Happy or Sad). Here is the choice of films you can choose from, we will start with the Sad ones first.

Sad Films

Slumdog Millionaire is a 2008 British Film which Won several Awards and appeared in the first Your Choice Poll last year. However it came 3rd in last years poll losing to both The Shawshank Redemption and High School Musical. I don’t want to watch it because I think it looks both Boring and Rubbish.

Forest Gump is a 1994 Film starring Tom Hanks. Forest Gump appeared alongside Slumdog Millionaire in last year’s poll and came in 4th place. I have seen some clips of this film and it did look rather confusing and it also looked Boring.

Happy Films

X-MEN 2 is a 2003 superhero film involving the characters of the X-Men comic and it is the sequel to the 2000 Film X-Men. Not only is it the best film in the X-Men Film Series but I think it is also the Best Marvel Film. If you have recently seen X-Men First Class and not any films of the original trilogy it is time that you do see them because you will understand First Class a whole lot more if you know something about the characters. X-Men 2 is a good starting point and you don’t need to watch the first film to get an understanding of what is going on.

District 9 is a 2009 Sci-fi Action film about an alien ship in the sky above Johannesburg and aliens are living in the city in an area called District 9. The film was directed by Neill Blomkamp and Produced by Peter Jackson. The film was based on a short film that Blomkamp made called Alive in Joburg. District 9 was nominated for several awards including the Oscar for Best Picture and won several awards including an Oscar for best Adapted Screenplay. District 9 was one of my top 3 favourite films of 2009 along with Sherlock Holmes and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Well there are the films you can vote for so now it is up to you which ones get voted for. You can vote only once so make sure you make the right decision. Also I have randomized the order they appear in so you will need to make sure you have ticked the right one as well. When you have chosen simply click the Vote button. You have until Midnight December 31st 2011 (New Year’s Eve) to vote and the film will be reviewed in February (or maybe even January). The Choice is Yours.

Sam’s Rant – Film Awards 2010

5 05 2011

The Film awards season has passed and there have been many awards handed out and it was quite surprising to see that Christopher Nolan was not even nominated for Best Director. It may seem an unusual time for me to do my Film Awards but because of me being at University it was quite hard to see some films. Because of this I decided to wait until I saw a couple of films I wanted to see before I made my decision.

I thought that this year I might go into a bit more detail with the winners but I will try to keep it brief.

Best Actor – The Nominations are:

Denzel Washington for Unstoppable, Sam Worthington for Clash of the Titans, Robert Downey JR for Iron Man 2 and Leonardo DiCaprio for Inception.

The Winner is Denzel Washington for his role as Frank Barnes in Unstoppable.

Best Supporting Actor – The Nominations are:

Ken Watanabe for Inception, Liam Neeson for Clash of the Titans, Don Cheadle for Iron Man 2 and Shane Rangi for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

The Winner is Liam Neeson for his role as Zeus in Clash of the Titans.

Best Actress – The Nominations are:

Angelina Jolie for SALT, Ellen Page for Inception, Rosario Dawson for Unstoppable, Gwyneth Paltrow for Iron Man 2 and Georgie Henley for The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

The Winner is Ellen Page for her role as Ariadne in Inception. It was going to be close between Ellen Page and Rosario Dawson but Ellen Page’s character in Inception was Amazing.

There is no Best Supporting Actress because I can’t think of any that really stood out for me.

Most Disappointing Film of the Year:

I was really looking forward to The A-Team. I am a fan of the original series and I was really looking forward to this but it did not meet my expectations. The story was also hard to follow; you have the good guys, the bad guys, the good guys who become bad guys, the bad guys who become good guys then bad guys and so on where as the original series had Good Guys vs Bad Guys.

Worst Film of the Year:

The Worst Film of 2010 is also the Worst film in the World, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1. It was Rubbish, you have a story line which involves some kind of emotion searching pieces, a scene where the film becomes a B Horror Movie and an Animation Sequence which looks like something from a Tim Burton Film. The film had no Plot, the Characters were bad and on the whole it was an absolutely Pants Film.

Best Trailer – The Nominations are:

Unstoppable, Clash of the Titans, Skyline and The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

The Winner is Clash of the Titans. When I saw the trailer I had it going through my head, the Heavy Metal Soundtrack, The Special Effects and the shots of the film, It looked Amazing.

Best Special Effects – The Nominations are:

Clash of the Titans, Inception, Monsters, Unstoppable and Skyline.

The Winner is Clash of the Titans, this film is based on a movie classic and with the new CGI Special Effects it looked amazing, in particular the Giant Scorpion and The Kraken. It is Good to see Special Effects artist stop working on something when the effect is reached and does not continue to work on it no matter how much money the studio has been given, Good Work.

Most Anticipated Film of 2010:

Clash of the Titans, it is based on a Classic Film from 1981 by Ray Harryhausen and it has the right special effects for the Modern Film Age.

Most Anticipated Film of 2011:

This one is difficult but on the whole I would say Transformers: Dark of the Moon. The next film in the series. I really enjoyed the first 2 and I can’t wait to see the next one.

Best Soundtrack – The Nominations are:

Unstoppable, Clash of the Titans and Iron Man 2.

The Winner is Unstoppable for a soundtrack that only gets faster and more intense.

Most Original Idea – The Nominations are:

Inception, Salt, Skyline, Unstoppable and Monsters.

The Winner is Inception for its bizarre idea of having a dream inside a dream inside a dream.

Best Character – The Nominations are:

Evelyn Salt (SALT), Frank Barnes (Unstoppable), Ariadne (Inception), Connie Hooper (Unstoppable) and Tony Stark (Iron Man 2).

The Winner is Evelyn Salt from SALT. The Character is almost as confusing as Inception but it is one of those rare times that a Character has so many back stories and they all work. The Character of Evelyn Salt is very Good and a good rival to James Bond, It will be interesting to see if a series is made from this film.

Best Director – The Nominations are:

Christopher Nolan for Inception, Tony Scott for Unstoppable, Gareth Edwards for Monsters, Phillip Noyce for SALT and John Favreau for Iron Man 2.

The Winner is Christopher Nolan for Inception. Inception is an amazing film and Nolan is an amazing Director, you can tell that from Inception and previous films including The Dark Knight.

Now it is time for the Main Award.

Best Film of 2010:

Just like last year I will give you the Top 5 Films of the Year with Number 1 being the Best Film of 2010.

5. Monsters

4. Iron Man 2

2. Unstoppable
