Second Place

First 12 of 2012 Second Place

Well First 12 of 12 has finished and even though I aimed for First Place i am very happy on getting Second Place. It has been a lot of fun and also a lot of hard work. I started out with no posts but in just over 24 hours I had 7 and that put me into first place but then Hannah had to fly in and swoop victory. Oh Well, I will Win Next Time (I think I showed my hand too quickly). I have had amazing fun and some of the posts I have written are some of my favourite Posts I have done in the history of my Blog. I think the best one I did was Raging Bull and I did enjoying doing the 2012 Films, King Kong and Gamera.

Now I think it would be nice to choose which of my Competitors posts I like the Best:

Tim did a post about Music Composers and the thing I particularly liked about this was when I told him about Akira Ifukube and he may have put him in the list.

Hannah did a post about her Birthday Dance and it was nice when she talked about how important friendship is, and there was a nice picture as well.

Matt had one which had the RootHill DVD trailer on it. OK I took a brief look at it but out of the posts I read I liked this one a lot.

Well now it is over for this year and it has been fun. Thankyou to Matt for arranging it and hopefully do it again (and maybe ask me to get involved in future challenges) Next Year.

What is Gamera? (150th Post)

6 01 2012

To celebrate my 150th post I thought I would tell you all who Gamera is. Now I have mentioned him a few times and so now I think is a Good Time to explain further (I am not going to go too in depth because I also plan to do a Brief History of Gamera like I did for Godzilla). Gamera is a Cultural Icon in both the Monster Movie Gnre and Japanes Cinema. Created by a rival studio (Daiei) to TOHO they decided to create a rival to the Godzilla Film Series and tap into the Market. Gamera is a Giant Armoured Fire Breathing Flying Turtle. OK that sound like a mouthful.

In the Showa Series he was one of a species of Giant Turtle and after a Nuclear Blast in the Arctic which seems famillar wakes up and goes on a rampage in Japan. For the rest of the series he becomes a hero and saves japan from many giant monsters while also being the friend of Children (because he saved their lives quite a lot). Because of the children connection many Monster movies saw the introduction of children being included in their films. In the Heisei Series Gamera is now the Guardian of the Universe. He is now a more legendary creature who was created by Atlantis to destroy one of atlantis’s previous creations; Gyaos. This series is by far the Best and is finally able to compete with Godzilla in both Content and Effects. Director Shusuke Kaneko later went on to Direct a Godzilla Film. The Third Film in the trilogy is highly regarded by many as one of the Greatest Monster Films in the History of Cinema. In the Millenium Series only one film has been made so far and that one rebooted the origins story again by showing how a previous Gamera killed himself to kill a group Gyaos that were attacking a village. Then 33 years later a small boy finds a turtle egg and the turtle inside quickly grows to become Gamera.

Well you should now be more well informed o f who Gamera is. He has starred in 12 films and has fought many Giant Monsters but while there has not been a Gamera film for six years I don’t think it will be too long until he comes back to save the day. I mean Gamera’s 50th Birthday is coming, there needs to be some kind of celebration. Maybe one day the film will be made where he fights another Japanese Icon, Godzilla vs Gamera.

King Kong vs King Kong 1976 vs King Kong 2005

6 01 2012

You may not know this but there has been 2 remakes of the original King Kong film. So on the eve of my 150th Post I thought I would pit them against one another and tell you which one is the best Starting with the film that has come in third place (I won’t go into too much detail because I don’t want to spoil future reveiws).

King Kong 2005. Now while this is a more direct remake it is the third place winner because of what has been done with the character. King Kong is more than just an Ape, he is a force of nature, he is not just an animal he stands for what nature can do when it is angry just like Godzilla. This film had Kong as more of an Ape and an animal and not the force of nature his character is supposed to be. The film’s effects are pretty Good but not as good as they could have been, they could have been Jurassic Park Effects but somewhere in production they decided to over do it.  Also the film is just far too long. OK Peter Jackson made it but it does not mean that the film had to be as long as Lord of the Rubbish. While it is a terrific film it could have been so much more than just a film, this is a remake of one of the great icons in film history but it has let the side down a bit. It is also a Good Point to make that the Woman is not supposed to fall in Love with the Creature.

King Kong (1933 Original). What many people consider as the best I consider the second best. The film has a normal sized feature lenght of about less than 2 hours so it is not as the 2005 Film. The film also features the Pioneering Work of StopMotion Animator Willis O’Brien. So with all these Pros why is it Second in my List, well Let me Explain.

King Kong 1976.  If you can take an Icon and place it in a more modern period and still make it work it is Fantastic and especially Fantastic if you can make the creature look Real and that is what Dino De Laurentiis has managed to do. While the 2005 film was a bit overdone this one was a block in a suit and when there is something standing there and you don’t need to over do your brain power it is a bonus and looks far more real than CGI and While I am a fan of StopMotion Animation I like it when there is a bit more fluidity in the movement of a creature and you get that with a suit. OK the Giant Animatronic Scenes were not as Good as the suit but the did give a perspective of Kong’s Size. Also the modern setting helps particularly when you have Kong Climb up the Twin Towers in New York. All of these reasons is why this Film is my Favourite King Kong Film.

Which King Kong is your Favourite?

Where Have My Sweets Gone – Arbitrary Stopframe no 2: Fruit Pastilles

6 01 2012

Arbitrary Stopframe no 2: Fruit Pastilles (M.C. Media - 2011)

The next film in the series of Stop Motion Animation films is the sequel to Marker Pen and it tells the story of survival and what creatures will do to survive. This is one of the funnest in the series. The story tells of a little creature who removes some chocolate coins so he can take away some Fruit Pastilles to survive and then gets caught eating them by a giant hand, the creature then looks sad.

I have already covered the music so It is straight into the Special Effects. There is more motion in the creature with his snout moving it looks really nice and the colours work well with the creature. The scene with the giant hand is also pretty amazing and so some really Good Animatronics were used in that scene, much like scenes from the 1976 King Kong. However there is less content than there was in the first one and so while this is a strong entry in the series it does not compare with the original, it does also appear to be shorter than the original. However this is an other Good film from this young film maker.

Trailers Of My Youth

6 01 2012

When I was about 10/11 II saw 2 movie trailers which tell a story. Now the movies of Course tell a story in them but when these films came out they were part of a craze that had gone global and the films showed how big the craze got and it’s staying power. Now in the past Video Game films don’t do very well at the Cinema but there are some which became financial success’s. However these 2 films are from the same series and are based on the animated series which came out of the craze so these films are more based on the animated series and not the Video Game. if you still have not worked out what I am talking about, well it is called Pokémon. the films in question are Pokémon 2000 and Pokémon 3: The Movie. Now even though there was a First Movie I don’t really remember a trailer so I am not going to talk about it – well not until my Review.

By far the best film in the series, Pokémon 2000 involved the story of trying to save the world from a man who tries to capture a rare Pokémon. In order to do this he must enrage and ancient legend to make it come out. Well the cast of the animated series save the day and the world with the help of Lugia (One of my Favourite Pokémon) . As you can see the title is 2000 which means the film came out in 1999. Yes it came out before the Millenium. I saw this at the Cinema with my Mam and when you went to see these films they always gave a Pokémon Card out and I remember getting 2 Mew Cards. However they need translating (and still do) before I can play them. A Very Fun film and one of the best Animated films I have seen.

Pokémon 3 is the last one I saw at the Cinema. It officially came out on Video first (Yes – Video) but then it was on one Saturday at the Kids Showing. Pokémon 3 is also the scariest of the ones I have seen. It involves the story of a little girl’s father disappearing and then she befriends creatures called Unown who make every wish come true.  The Cast of the Animated series come to save the day and have to compete with Entei (A Pokémon who the girl thinks is her dad) and the Unown. This one was very scary to watch even after I had seen it a few times but it has a Happy Ending. Still a Fun Film.

These films show how a Craze went Global and tells a story of Cinema and Pokémon. and while these films are not seen or heard much these day they leave a big impression to those who saw them and while there are new craze’s and Ideas Pokémon is still one of the biggest in the world today and the film series in particular is something I really liked and really enjoyed watching. I can’t wait to review them.
